Housing programs

Through eight programs, Sioux Falls Housing & Redevelopment Commission provides rental assistance to approximately 2,000 households. Some of which are targeted to special populations.

Sioux Falls Housing and Redevelopment Commission (SFHRC) has closed their Section 8 waiting list effective immediately.  New waiting list applications will not be accepted until further notice.

For those already on the Section 8 waiting list, please continue to contact SFHRC in writing with updates to your record (address, household composition, disability status, and income),  by completing the yellow Waiting List Update form, or emailing: sfhrc@siouxfallshousing.org.

La comision de ReUrbanización y Vivienda de Sioux Falls (SFHRC) ha cerrado su lista de espera del programa sección 8 con efecto inmediato.  En estos momentos no se aceptarán nuevas solicitudes en lista de espera hasta nuevo aviso.

Para aquellas personas/familias que ya están en la lista de espera del programa sección 8, continue comunicándose con La comision de ReUrbanización y Vivienda de Sioux Falls (SFHRC)  por escrito con actualizaciones de su registro, por ejemplo: dirección, estructura del hogar, estado de discapacidad e ingresos, completando el formulario Amarillo de actualización de la lista de espera o enviando un correo electrónico a: sfhrc@siouxfallshousing.org.

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher

Housing Choice Voucher (commonly called “Section 8” or “HCV”) is a HUD-funded, tenant-based program that allows qualified households to receive rental assistance in a unit of their choice, provided it meets certain criteria. An HCV allows participating households to select a qualified dwelling unit (i.e., apartment, house, or mobile home), and SFHRC will administer a HUD subsidy to make the rent more affordable.

Public Housing & South Sycamore Estates

Sioux Falls Housing owns 24 single-family homes and 16 apartments in Sioux Falls. These units provide housing to people who are at or below 30% Area Median Income (AMI) and 50% AMI, respectively. Please contact our office to learn more about rental opportunities.

Veterans Administration
Supportive Housing (VASH)

The HUD-VASH program provides rental assistance under a supportive housing program for veterans who are homeless. This program combines Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance that is administered by SFHRC with ongoing case management, health services, and supportive services that are administered by the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Moderate Rehabilitation
(Mod Rehab)

This is a project-based program that requires applicants to move into specified units in order to receive rental assistance. Applicants who indicate an interest in this program will be contacted by mail when a landlord notifies Sioux Falls Housing that one of these apartments and/or houses will be available to rent.

Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS)

The FSS is a program that enables HUD-assisted families to increase their earned income and reduce their dependency on welfare assistance and rental subsidies. Once an eligible family is selected to participate in the program, the PHA/owner, and the head of each participating family execute a FSS Contract of Participation that specifies the rights and responsibilities of both parties

Shelter Plus Care
(S+C or CoC)

This tenant-based voucher program for persons or families who have struggled with chronic homelessness and suffer from severe and persistent mental health issues. It allows qualified individuals/families to receive rental assistance in the unit of his/her/their choice, as long as it meets HUD's Housing Quality Standards.

Tri-State HELP (HOPWA)

Tri-State HELP is a statewide tenant-based voucher program for persons or families in South Dakota with an HIV/AIDS diagnosis. This program allows qualified individuals/families under 80% of the area median income to receive rental assistance for a dwelling unit of his/her choice anywhere in South Dakota.

Emergency Housing Vouchers (EHV)

The EHV Program is a subset of the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program with alternate eligibility requirements that assist individuals/families facing homelessness, at-risk of homelessness, exiting Rapid Rehousing, or fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, or human trafficking.
