Emergency Housing Vouchers (EHV) Program

In 2021, Sioux Falls Housing & Redevelopment Commission (SFHRC) was awarded 63 Emergency Housing Vouchers to be used in Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County. The EHV program is a subset of the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program with alternate eligibility requirements that assist individuals/families facing homelessness, at-risk of homelessness, exiting Rapid Rehousing, or fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, or human trafficking. 

Do I quALIFY?

To be eligible for the EHV program, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Literally Homeless

  2. At-Risk of homelessness as a result of eviction, couch-surfing, economic hardship, exiting a hotel/motel, or otherwise lives in housing that has characteristics associated with instability and an increased risk of homelessness, as defined in Sioux Falls approved Consolidated Plan

  3. Fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, or human trafficking

  4. Recently homeless and providing rental assistance will prevent the family’s homelessness or having a high risk of housing instability

The EHV Program operates based on a referral system from Coordinated Entry and Victim Service Providers. For those who are fleeing or attempting to flee violence, stalking, or trafficking situation, direct referrals are available from three organizations in Sioux Falls: Call to Freedom, Compass Center, and Children’s Inn. For all other referrals, the referral must come from Coordinated Entry. If you feel that you meet one of the eligibility requirements, please contact the Coordinated Entry Assessment Phone Line to complete an over-the-phone assessment. You will then be placed in the Coordinated Entry system for possible referral.

How Do I Apply?

Sioux Falls Housing cannot guarantee that you will be referred for an EHV or any other program. Sioux Falls Housing also cannot guarantee the timeliness of a referral for EHV or any other program. A referral does not signify approval for the program; you will still be required to complete the application process.
